OUR INSTRUCTORS

KEVIN PERRY

My flying journey started in high school, earning my private pilot certificate in 2004. From there, I earned my A&P license from Embry-Riddle and then worked as an aircraft mechanic for the MetLife Airship, Air Wisconsin & American Airlines.
I enlisted in the United States Air Force and worked as an aircraft mechanic on the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. After my service in the Air Force, I used my GI Bill to earn a college degree and to finish my pilot ratings. I was a flight instructor in Charlotte, NC before relocating to Sturgeon Bay, WI where my wife & I started Perry Air.

TOM GWILYM

I earned my private pilot certificate in 1991 out of Boeing Field in Seattle, WA. In 1994, I earned my instrument, commercial, and CFI. I  worked as a CFI for many years and also gained some flight time as ”skydiver driver". Years later, I bought a house on an airport (Norman Grier Field) and bought a Cessna 150 that I flew from our backyard! In 2018, I relocated to Wisconsin. I met Kevin Perry in the summer of 2021. I then began flying again after a four year break. My total flight time is just over 2,800 hours with about 2,400 as a flight instructor. I've flown about 31 different planes in that time!

Jon Spencer

I have always had an interest aviation since I was young. While I was in high school, I was lucky to be able to participate in a new aviation program. For a full year, I helped with the construction of a Cessna 172.  I received my pilot ratings and a four year college degree at Eastern Kentucky University. I flew many different  Cessna 172 models and I flew a Piper Seminole for my multi engine rating. After College, I pursued my CFI and then CFII. I then relocated to Wisconsin, where I found the opportunity to instruct at Perry Air.

TIMELINE TO TAKEOFF
START FLYING
The first step in getting started with your flight training is to schedule an discovery flight.
Perry Air offers discovery flights for only  $219! This includes approximately 45 minutes of flight time plus a 30 minute ground session to discuss the PPL training requirements. After that, we’ll work on getting you scheduled to start learning the flight maneuvers necessary for your PPL! Perry Air recommends flying at least two times per week. Flying can be a perishable skill and the more often you fly, the more economical it will be in the long run. The FAA requires a student pilot to log a minimum of 40 hours before they can take the private pilot checkride.
APPLY FOR A MEDICAL CERT.
The process of obtaining a medical certificate is fairly simple. It’s really no different than scheduling a routine doctor’s appointment with your primary care physician. It is important to note that you will need to have your medical certificate issued prior to your first solo flight. It is recommended that obtaining your medical certificate is one of the first things you should do prior to flight training. It would be really unfortunate to spend thousands of dollars learning to fly only to find out you're medically disqualified prior to your solo flight.
APPLY FOR A STUDENT PILOT CERT.
If you’re looking to get your private pilot license , you will need to apply for your student pilot certificate. A student pilot certificate will be needed prior to your first solo flight but is best if you start the process as soon as possible. You can apply for your student pilot certificate through the Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) website. The flight instructors at Perry Air will walk you through this process!
PASS THE PRIVATE PILOT KNOWLEDGE EXAM
Registering & passing the private pilot knowledge exam can take place during any phase of your flight training as long as it is done prior to scheduling your check ride (practical exam). Some flight schools or instructors recommend that the student should complete the knowledge exam prior to flying so they have (1) baseline knowledge of aerodynamics, airspace, etc (2) it is one less thing to focus on during your flight training. The FAA written exam is a pass or fail only exam. It consists of 65 questions and a 70% or greater is needed to pass. It’s important to note that the questions you answer incorrectly on the knowledge exam may be asked by the FAA  examiner during the oral examination.
PASS THE PRIVATE PILOT PRACTICAL EXAM
Your check ride will consist of both an oral & practical flight examination performed by a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE). Prices for DPE vary wildly by location and can be anywhere from $500-$1,000. During the oral portion of the exam, you will be questioned on airspace, weather, FAA regulations, flight planning, etc. The flight portion will consist of the maneuvers that you learned during your flight training. These maneuvers must be performed within the standards set forth by the Airman Certification Standards (ACS).
